What are the best read-aloud reading apps for kids aged 9 to 12?
Short answer: Fewer apps fit this age than the early grades, because most phonics and early-reading apps end around 3rd to 5th grade. For ages 9 to 12 the options that say they reach that far are Microsoft Reading Coach and Kids Shelf, both free, and Readigo, a paid iPhone and iPad app for ages 6–12. Readigo's library leans toward 6 to 9: on 2026-11-02 its English library had 13 stories with a top age of 10 or more and 8 manga stories labelled 9–10, so an older reader has a shorter shelf than a younger one.

What the app hears during one short passage
It starts on its own. The passage lights up word by word, the way the app follows a child reading aloud - and slows down where the reader stumbles.
Milo the fox found a red kite stuck high in the old oak tree, and he tugged until it came free.
Tricky words get an orange mark.
What a 9 to 12 year old needs from a reading app
An older child who can decode is not learning to sound out words any more. The work is reading longer passages smoothly, with expression, and understanding them. A decodable-book app has nothing to teach a child at that point, and a cartoon interface can feel babyish to a ten year old.
Four things matter. Text that is long and interesting enough to be worth reading. Feedback that treats the child as capable and does not over-praise. Practice reading aloud, because reading aloud with feedback is one of the practices the National Reading Panel (2000) found to build fluency. And a reason to come back, which for this age is usually the story itself, a comic format or a sense of control. Comprehension questions help, but a child who is bored will not answer them.
If your older child reads slowly, skips words or reads flatly, see what helps a child who reads slowly and what to do when a child skips words first. If decoding itself is the problem, see phonics app or read-aloud practice.
Where most apps stop
Bookbot's site says its audience is kindergarten to 3rd grade (read 2026-11-01). Ello's site says ages 5–9 (read 2026-11-02). Readability's App Store listing says kindergarten to 6th grade (read 2026-11-02). Amira is a school product and we found no family version. For a 10 year old who reads well but flatly, the first three have little left to teach, and the fourth is not for sale to families.
That is a fact about age ranges, not about quality. Each of those apps does what it says for the children it is built for.
Apps that say they reach ages 9 to 12
| App | What it says about age | Price (US) | Where the voice is processed | Platforms |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Reading Coach | Most useful for ages 6–11, suitable for 5–18 (Microsoft, 2026-11-02). English (US) only. | Free with a personal Microsoft account or through a school | On the device, per Microsoft | Web browser, Windows. No iPhone or Android app found. |
| Kids Shelf | 4–13, kindergarten to 8th grade (its site, 2026-11-01). English stories. | Free | On the device only, per the developer | iPhone, iPad, Android |
| Readigo | 6–12 | $9.99 a month or $59.99 a year, no free trial | In the cloud, audio deleted right after scoring | iPhone, iPad |
| Google Read Along | Ages not stated by Google (2026-11-01). Works best once a child knows some of the alphabet. | Free | On the device, per Google | Android |
Read Along is listed for completeness. Google does not state an age range, and its design is for early readers, so we would not pick it for a 10 year old. Every cell is the maker's own statement, and we have tested none of them. For the longer comparison, see which reading apps listen to a child read aloud.
Where Readigo fits for older kids
Readigo is an iOS app for ages 6–12 that listens while a child reads aloud, scores every sentence in percent, marks misread words in red and crosses out skipped ones, and lets the child tap Try again at once. Parents see accuracy, books, minutes and sentences in the app at any time. It does not teach phonics lessons, so it suits an older child who already decodes.
How much is there for a 9 to 12 year old? We counted the English library on 2026-11-02. It has 74 stories and 14 manga stories. Thirteen stories have a top age of 10 or more: five are labelled 10–12, six are labelled 8–10 (a mystery series) and two are labelled 9–10. Eight manga stories are labelled 9–10, and none is labelled 10–12. The rest of the library is aimed at ages 5 to 9. The older shelf is real and smaller than the one for younger children.
Manga Mode has comic-panel stories with the same scoring, and some parents find a comic format easier to start with for a reluctant reader. Readigo is paid and scores speech in the cloud. If free or on-device matters more, the two free options above are the alternatives. See which reading app keeps a child's voice private.
A simple way to choose
Try the free options first if your child reads at home on a computer or an Android device and you want no cost. Choose Readigo if you want a score for every sentence on an iPhone or iPad, a parent report in the app, stories in English, Spanish, French, German, Polish or Ukrainian, and you accept the smaller older library. Whatever you pick, ten calm minutes of reading aloud most days beats a long session once a week. See how long a child should read aloud each day.
Related questions
What is the best reading app for a 10 year old?
It depends on the child. For a 10 year old who decodes but reads slowly or flatly, read-aloud practice with feedback fits. Microsoft Reading Coach and Kids Shelf are free and say they reach that age. Readigo is a paid iPhone and iPad app for ages 6–12 with a smaller shelf of stories for older readers. Phonics apps such as Bookbot and Ello are built for younger children.
Why do most reading apps stop at 3rd to 5th grade?
Most are built to teach decoding, which children usually master in the early grades. Bookbot says kindergarten to 3rd grade and Ello says ages 5–9. Fluency and comprehension practice for older children is a smaller market.
Does Readigo have enough content for a 12 year old?
Some, but less than for younger children. On 2026-11-02 the English library had five stories labelled 10–12, two labelled 9–10, six labelled 8–10 and eight manga stories labelled 9–10. Most of the library is for ages 5 to 9.
Is Readigo too babyish for a 10 year old?
The older stories and Manga Mode are written for upper elementary readers, but the app also has a friendly dragon, Igo, who suits younger children. If your child dislikes anything childish, try Manga Mode or one of the free apps first.
Can a 12 year old who reads poorly use these apps?
Read-aloud practice helps a child who decodes. A 12 year old who cannot yet decode regular words needs a school reading assessment and structured instruction. An app is practice, not a diagnosis.
