Readigo vs Read Along by Google: free and on-device, or scored sentence by sentence?

Read Along by Google is a free, ad-free reading app for Android that works offline and analyzes voice on the device. Readigo is for iPhone, ages 6-12, from $9.99/mo. An honest comparison.

Quick answer: Read Along by Google is a free Android app with no ads or in-app purchases. A reading buddy listens while a child reads aloud, it works offline, and Google says voice data is analyzed on the device. Readigo is an iPhone and iPad app for ages 6-12 that scores every sentence in percent and marks the words a child misread or skipped, from $9.99 a month. If you have an Android phone and a young reader, start with Read Along. If you have an iPhone, Read Along is not an option.

These two apps do the same basic thing: a child reads a story out loud and the app listens. They differ on the practical questions first. Read Along is free, has no ads, and works without an internet connection after the first download. Readigo is a paid subscription on Apple devices only.

The second difference is what the child gets back. Read Along's reading buddy offers help when a child struggles and rewards them with stars when they do well. Readigo shows a score in percent after each sentence, the misread words in red, the skipped words crossed out, and a button to try the sentence again. Both are fair approaches; they suit different children.

Readigo

Pricing
$9.99 per month or $59.99 per year in the US App Store. No free trial, no free tier. iOS only.
Age range
6 to 12, with the core of the library aimed at 7 to 10.
Best for
iPhone and iPad families whose child can already sound words out and needs steady practice, older children who would find a stars-and-badges app young, and anyone reading in Spanish, French, German, Polish or Ukrainian.

Read Along by Google

Free reading app for Android with an in-app reading buddy that listens to a child read aloud, offers help and awards stars.

Pricing
Free. Google's listing says there are no ads and no in-app purchases. Android only: it is on Google Play, and we found no iPhone version in the US App Store search on 2026-11-01.
Age range
Google's listing gives no age range (it is rated 3+) and says the app works best for children who already know some of the alphabet.
Best for
Families on Android who want a no-cost, no-ads reading app for a young reader, including homes with little or no internet, and anyone reading in Hindi, Bangla, Urdu, Telugu, Marathi, Tamil or Portuguese, which Readigo does not offer.
Where it falls short
It is not available on iPhone or iPad as far as we could find. Its nine languages do not include French, German, Polish or Ukrainian. The listing describes stars, badges and help when a child struggles, not a score for each sentence or a list of the words to practice, and it does not mention a parent report beyond each child's own profile and progress.

When to choose each

Choose Readigo if

You use an iPhone or iPad, your child can already decode, and you want a score for each sentence and the exact words to practice. You also accept that audio is scored in the cloud (deleted right after scoring) and that you pay a subscription.

Choose Read Along if

You are on Android, you want a free app with no ads, you need it to work offline, or keeping the voice on the device matters most to you. It is also the only one of the two for Hindi, Bangla, Urdu, Telugu, Marathi, Tamil and Portuguese.

What you actually see in the app

The progress report and the parent view - what shows up after an ordinary week of five-minute sessions.

Frequently asked

  • Is Google Read Along available on iPhone?

We found no iPhone version. Google lists Read Along on Google Play, and a US App Store search on 2026-11-01 did not return it. Readigo is the other way round: iPhone and iPad only, with no Android app.

  • Is Read Along really free?

Google's listing says so: zero cost, no ads, no in-app purchases. Readigo costs $9.99 a month or $59.99 a year in the US App Store, with no free trial.

  • Which one keeps a child's voice more private?

Read Along, by design. Google says voice data is analyzed in real time on the device and is not stored or sent to Google servers. Readigo processes audio in the cloud and deletes it right after scoring, with no recordings kept and no voice profiles. If on-device processing is your requirement, choose Read Along.

  • Which one scores the reading more precisely?

Readigo shows a score in percent after each sentence and marks the misread and skipped words. Read Along's listing describes help when a child struggles and stars for doing well, and does not describe a per-sentence score. We have not tested Read Along's feedback in depth, so compare by trying it if the detail matters to you.

  • Can my child use both?

Only on different devices, since each runs on one platform. In a mixed household, a child on an Android tablet can use Read Along while another child on an iPad uses Readigo.
