Why fourth-grade sight words matter
By 4th grade, reading is how school happens: science, history, and word problems all arrive as text. A child who reads them instantly moves through a textbook page at the speed of thought; a child who pauses on them loses the thread of the paragraph.

How to use this list
- ✓Work in batches of 10-15. Fourth graders can handle bigger batches - most of these words follow patterns they already know.
- ✓Read them in real text. Flashcards are training wheels by now. Find the words in a science page or a novel chapter - recognition in context is the goal.
- ✓Use them in writing. Have your child write sentences with the week's words. Spelling a word correctly cements reading it instantly.

A note on the research
By 4th grade, the National Reading Panel's fluency findings matter more than word lists themselves: children consolidate high-frequency vocabulary through volume - wide, daily reading with feedback. If this list feels hard, the fix usually isn't more word drills. It's a fluency check and more mileage on right-level text, because a 4th grader still working on word recognition is spending attention the textbook assumes is free.

Do 4th graders still need sight word practice?
